What is a Flourishing Life?
A flourishing life is one where we try to minimize suffering for all.
Negative rule utilitarianism. Minimize suffering. Suffering can be mostly agreed upon. Though the long-term suffering of lack of fulfillment is harder to address.
But happiness itself is so much more varied, in fact it's presumptuous, conceited, to tell people what makes them happy.
But we can all relate to suffering more so as a universal ah thats suffering
Prevents repugnant conclusion if we define suffering of a certain level as standard. Maybe a bit weak like how Peter Singer transitioned back to full utility instead of just preference to avoid pain
Why do I care about the suffering of other sentient beings? Deontological view of universal law, (universality clause of the categorical imperative). If others thought that way, I would suffer (selfishly). We work together. 1 person can't do it all. If I lived in a world where everyone only thought of themselves, would I reasonably want to live in that world?
If I saw others suffering I would want to help. But I don’t care about everyone else I don’t know about. But is that a logical fallacy?
So maybe I would want to live in a world where people care about those around them, that makes them function. The community. Aristotle’s sense of self.
But then when about ASI? Or if someone takes control of the world like Hitler and starts killing. As long as it’s not us we’re ok? Well I guess it would threaten us if he gained too much power eventually. This is the current state of the majority of humans on Earth, Patriotism + still human rights for all humans.
We're all discovering the dangerous future of potential super intelligent AI; but at the core of it,
being human is what's most important. Caring four our communities, and helping each other, and remembering the precious memories shared.
